Up to $160,000 in grants will soon be available to social and affordable housing projects across NSW and WA through Homes for Homes, an Australian not-for-profit organisation seeking to address homelessness.

Up to $80,000 will be available in both NSW and WA, with applications opening on Monday 11 April, housing providers are encouraged to apply.

Homes for Homes was created by Australia’s largest social enterprise, The Big Issue. It raises funds through donors, both individuals and developers, who agree to donate 0.1% of their property’s sale price or monthly rent. These donations are pooled and are granted.

Homes for Homes CEO Steven Persson said the organisation is delighted to extend their
support to new areas and projects as this is the first time that the grants are available in NSW and WA.

“Homes for Homes is pleased to continue its expansion across Australia and open up grant funding in new states,” Mr Persson said.

housing is encouraged to apply,” Mr Persson said.

How does Homes For Homes Work?

So far Homes for Homes has granted $1.28 million to social and affordable housing providers in the ACT and NT, VIC and Qld.  This has led to the support of 13 projects providing housing for 96 people.

Community Housing Canberra was one of the previous recipiants for the Homes for Homes grant. Their project aimed to support people with mental illness in a transition from living with ageing parents, to living more independently with 24/7 support.

An Aboriginal Housing Victoria redevelopment project was another recent recipiant. The project involved the referbishment of an underutilised dwelling into two long-term social and affordable housing units for Aboriginal tenancies.

Applications will be assessed by industry advisory groups based locally in NSW and WA.
