  • The proposed Pinkenba quarantine facility in Brisbane is one step closer to reality
  • With an MoU signed, the Federal Government is free to begin construction
  • The facility is to be completed by mid 2022

The Queensland Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the proposed Pinkenba quarantine facility, bringing the Commonwealth Government’s plans one step closer to reality.

The facility is to be built by the federal government on the site of 30-hectare army barracks, conveniently located just metres from the Brisbane Airport.

The intended 1,000-bed facility is to be fully constructed by mid-2022, close to a hospital and on Commonwealth owned land.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles believes that quarantine facilities will remain essential to public health until all Australians have been offered a Covid vaccination.

“The Queensland Government continues to work collaboratively with the Commonwealth to further the Federal Government’s proposal for a quarantine facility at the Damascus Barracks,” Mr Miles said.

“On Friday, the Premier signed an MOU with the Australian Government to allow them to proceed with construction of the Commonwealth quarantine facility at Pinkenba.

“That means the Australian Government can get started building it, and once constructed, the Queensland Government will provide services to the facility.

 Steven Miles, Queensland Deputy Premier

“Following countless breaches from the nation’s hotel quarantine system it’s clear there is an urgent need for more fit-for-purpose quarantine facilities throughout Australia.”
