York Estates, a premium independent property consultant based in London, has announced they are now selling an apartment in Crawford Mansions – the building which world-renowned American-born poet TS Eliot used to live in.
Nestled in Crawford Street, within the opulent settings of Marylebone in the district of City of Westminster, Crawford Mansions has a green plaque to celebrate the American poet and playwright.
The 1948 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, T.S. Eliot moved into 18 Crawford Mansions with his wife, Vivienne, in March 1916, shortly after the publication of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, the poem that made him famous.
Westminster occupies a large area of central Greater London, including most of the West End. Many London landmarks are within the borough, including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Whitehall, Westminster Cathedral, 10 Downing Street, and Trafalgar Square.
An enviable location by today’s standards, the address was not so attractive in the early 20th century. Sat in the triangle between the Edgware Road and Marylebone Road, Crawford Mansions was then surrounded by “slums and low streets and poor shops”. The residence was noisy and in Vivienne’s own words: “the tiniest place imaginable”.
“The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes,
Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening,
Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains,
Let fall upon its back the soot that falls from chimneys,
Slipped by the terrace, made a sudden leap,
And seeing that it was a soft October night,
Curled once about the house, and fell asleep.”
From The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T. S. Eliot

An enviable property gem in 2023
Nevertheless number 16 Crawford Mansions is set to be one of the most sought-after properties on the market this year, according to Julia Lilley, owner and founder of York Estates.
She says “York Estates is honoured to present a remarkable opportunity for potential buyers. The former residence of one of the world’s most celebrated poets, this building offers a unique connection to literary history.
“This charming two-bedroom flat is on the market for £850,000 and is located on the second floor of a well-maintained purpose-built building.
“The location is second to none, with easy access to the transportation hubs of Edgware, Baker Street, and Marylebone Stations. The fashionable offerings of Oxford Street and Marylebone High Street are also just a stone’s throw away” she said.
