- Value of total construction work fell -0.3% in September quarter

- Construction work falls in NSW, WA and ACT responsible for national decline
Despite reports of construction activity being given the green light to ramp up in NSW and VIC, total national construction work has recently slowed.
The latest data release from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) indicates total construction work fell by -0.3% in the September quarter.
Value of construction work falls
The -0.3% fall in estimated total construction work brings the total value of construction work to $53,926.2M.
Despite the quarterly fall in construction value, the annual change in construction work has risen by 3.5%.
Building work comprises over half of the current value of construction work, valued at $30,438.8M after falling by -0.9%.

Residential work observed no change remaining at $18,768.8M, while residential work declined by -2.2% to a value of $11,670.0M.
Engineering work was the only construction type to increase in the September quarter, rising by 0.4% to $23,487.5M.
Despite most construction types experiencing a quarterly decrease, most have seen an annual increase with the exception of non-residential work which has fallen by -2.4%.
NSW, WA and ACT biggest culprits
The total national fall in construction work can be attributed to declines in New South Wales, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.
The value of construction activity in the Australian Capital Territory fell by the most significant figure of -15.5%, bringing the value to $777.8M.
New South Wales followed with a decrease of -8.1% and Western Australia trailed behind, falling -3.2%.

All other states and territories increased in the value of construction work, however were not significant enough to outweigh the falls in the other three states.
The Northern Territory rose by an impressive 11.4%, though still recording the smallest value of any state or territory at $666.8M.
Victoria and Queensland performed similarly with an increase of 5.8% and 5.5% respectively.
Annually, most states and territories have recorded an increase in the value of construction work.
The exceptions to the trend are New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, declining -6.1% and -16.3% respectively.
