  • Platform will play a key role in providing student accommodation for the university

Charles Darwin University (CDU) has unveiled its CDU StudyStays platform to help inbound international students search for accommodation in a period when rental vacancy remains at an all-time low.

“When the students arrive to start the semester demand for housing will be strong at a time when availability is low,” says CDU Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman.

“These students are making one of the hardest, bravest, and most critical decisions of their lives – moving to a foreign country to pursue their education. One of the difficult decisions these students will have to make is where to live.”

The university expects around 600 students to need a place to stay to land in the Northern Territories over the coming weeks. Thus, CDU has been promoting their CDU StudyStays platform, which is an internet platform that lists available accommodations near CDU’s Casuarina, Waterfront, and Palmerston campuses.

Connecting students with landlords

The Australian company StudyStays provides and manages the platform, which offers similar services to other universities nationwide.

StudyStays connects prospective accommodation providers with students, allowing private and commercial property owners, other students, and real estate agents to register their properties to be listed on the platform.

Students can search for listings based on the number of rooms they need, the campus they are studying at, and their price range. Listings will include brief descriptions of the home, photos, estimated distances from the respective campuses, and a map displaying the general vicinity of the accommodation.

The platform is managed by CDU staff, who are available to assist users of the platform.

“For those wanting to fill a room and receive extra income, welcoming an international student into your home can offer consistent income and the chance to get to know someone with unique life experiences and perspectives.”

Scott Bowman, CDU Vice-Chancellor

CDU Accommodation Services Manager Dr Philip Mosely said CDU StudyStays would become a critical platform for the University and its students in the coming months and years.

Dr Philip Mosely, CDU Accommodation Services Manager, believes that CDU StudyStays will serve a pivotal role in housing its incoming students for the foreseeable future.

“In preparation for this influx of international students, we are bolstering CDU StudyStays to become the go-to tool for our students searching for appropriate off-campus accommodation,” Mosely says.

“With IHD and UniLodge already fully booked, we’re working to provide the most efficient resources and advice through platforms such as CDU StudyStays to make the search for accommodation less daunting for new students.”
