Global construction company Multiplex is celebrating a construction milestone of its $2 billion West Side Place development in Melbourne. The final two high-rise residential towers have ‘topped out’, reaching their highest point.

At 651-669 Lonsdale Street development Cottee Parker Architects have designed what will be one of the largest residential developments in Victoria. West Side Place will offer a total of 2,895 apartments over four towers.

Spanning 70 levels each, the final two towers are constructed in ‘Stage Two’ of West Side Place. The towers stand at an impressive 235 metres above street level.

Multiplex Regional Managing Director, Graham Cottam is pleased with the achievement.

“We are delighted to have reached this milestone on Stage Two of West Side Place, a critical step towards the completion of the CBD’s largest residential precinct”

In the now completed first stage of West Side Place, Multiplex delivered what will be Melbourne’s first Ritz-Carlton Hotel, due to open later this year. This second stage will see the addition of residential towers, retail arcades and a 308 room 4-star Dorsett Hotel.

The precinct spans an entire CBD block, with space dedicated to recreation and leisure. Over 3,000sqm will be utilised for ground-floor retail and 475 sqm will offer parkland and garden spaces.

Residents will enjoy exclusive access to a range of facilities including a wine cellar, private dining rooms, a luxury lounge, meeting rooms, rooftop cinema, garden terrace, lap pool and gymnasium.

Stage Two at West Side Place employed some 815 workers at peak staffing to achieve the topping out milestone.

The building team faced the challenge of constructing the complex podium façade integrating 21 different façade types that twist, protrude, and rake the curtain wall tower façade.

Multiplex has recently announced the completion of the Monash University campus in Melbourne Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney, Quay Quarter Tower in Sydney and Australia’s tallest twin skyscrapers in Melbourne.

While the project has achieved a significant milestone, it will not reach completion until   April 2023.
