  • Other courses include robotics, cyber security, big data, gaming and health services

Twenty new virtual Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses will be offered in NSW schools from next year.

In addition to face-to-face VET, Year 11 and 12 students will be able to study digital-enabled virtual TAFE ‘in-demand’ skilled courses such as real estate, robotics and cybersecurity.

This is all part of a review of the NSW curriculum, and the twenty new courses were added as they filled in various skill areas that could be in high demand over the coming years.

“We want to ensure NSW students receive world-class skills training to prepare them for the jobs of the future,” NSW Premier Ms Berejiklian said in a statement.

“These courses will help students build skills across emerging industries such as advanced manufacturing, technology and engineering.”

Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee called these new virtual courses a “win-win for students”.

“Not only does it make them instantly employable, they also have the choice to pursue further education in fields with plenty of career opportunities,” Mr Lee said.

Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said these are “exciting areas” for young people to be studying.

“Students with a keen interest in future-focussed courses will be able to link up with others, no matter where they go to school across NSW,” Ms Mitchell said.

It is interesting to see real estate in the mix. It’s not one you might think of as a future or emerging skill set, as the property industry has been around for centuries. However, it is a significant employer, and adding property to the mix allows students to learn some relatable skills.

These courses will form part of their HSC and contribute to their ATAR.
