- First childrens' hospice to be located in Swanbourne
- Cost estimated to be $24 million
- Facility to open in 2024
The Western Australian Government has confirmed the state’s first children’s hospice will be built in Perth’s western suburbs.
The new $25 million facility will include seven beds and three family accommodation suites.
Premier Mark McGowan announced a $4 million Lotterywest grant on Sunday which will go towards constructing the hospice. The funds were presented to the Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“WA’s first children’s hospice is another step closer to being established for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.
Mark McGowan, WA Premier
An estimated 2,000 children in Western Australia live with a life-limiting illness.
Statewide paediatric palliative care services are to be coordinated from the hospice, supporting these children and their families.
The facility will be built in Swanbourne, a location which Mr McGowan highlights as ideal due to its close proximity to greenery and the ocean.
The hospice will be located at Allen Park on the site that was once the Swanbourne Bowling Club.
“Its intimate design will provide a home away from home for families that will need this support,” said Mr McGowin.
The hospice will offer family and play rooms, a hydrotherapy pool and therapy rooms. A community garden will also be located beside the facility.
Construction is planned to commence at the end of 2022 while the facility is to open in 2024.
