Reservation and travel site Wotif.com has unveiled its top ten towns to travel to. After a difficult year, with international and interstate border closures, the tourist trade has taken a battering.
Now in its fourth year, the top tourist winners were announced, just as we all hope we can get out to some great destinations this year.
If you wanted to get out in the great blue yonder, where would you go?
This is Wotif’s recommendations, based on feedback from the finalist councils and tourism boards, collected by Wotif in December 2020…
1. Cairns, Qld
You can get half-price Qantas tickets to Cairns, courtesy of the federal government’s new plan. So why not jet up to the capital of the Great Barrier Reef, take a train right through the rainforest and Atherton Tablelands?
2. Pokolbin, NSW
Rolling rural hills in the beautiful Hunter Valley region, a short drive from Sydney. An important bird area and part of the Lower Hunter Valley wine region.
3. Apollo Bay, VIC
Southwestern Victoria along the Great Ocean Road, passing through the Great Otway National Park, rugged coastline, beaches, mountains, waterfalls, views. And keep going and you’re an hour one way from the Twelve Apostles, and an hour and a half the other way to Lorne.
4. Mudgee, NSW
World-class wineries, true country hospitality in the centre of the Mid-Western region, 250kms north-west of Sydney. Relax.
5. Lakes Entrance, VIC
The Gippsland region in southeastern Victoria, if you are into swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking and generally messing about in the water, this is your place. Where the Bass Strait meets the Tasman Sea.
6. McLaren Vale, SA
Anyone for a Shiraz? This is the place, along with more than 70 wineries, cheese, cycling trails and coastline. Just south of Adelaide.
7. Hervey Bay, QLD
Whale watching, diving, and Fraser Island on the doorstep, Hervey Bay is in southeastern Queensland with rainforest, beaches and calm waters for swimming.
8. Exmouth, WA
Many West Australians believe the Ningaloo Reef out surpasses the Great Barrier, especially as you can swim to it from the shore at Turquoise Bay. Whales, coral, reef fish in the morning, and stunning gorges and walks in the afternoon.
9. Port Macquarie, NSW
At the mouth of the Hastings River, well known for its beaches and wildlife. Dolphins, whales and a koala breeding centre. The ultimate seaside holiday spot.
10. The Entrance, NSW
Relax on the central coast where the Pacific Ocean meets a lake, water enthusiasts love this place.
