Why should you get home security?
Well, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), 4.3% of Australian households last financial year experienced either a break-in or attempted break-in – equating to over 400,000 break-in events.
More than two-thirds of these resulted in thefts of belongings.
Notably, about 11.8% of these result in confrontations with the perpetrator.
So, how does a household protect itself against theft?
In a survey conducted by Budget Direct, the most common method Australians used was by locking doors and windows.
After this, however, the other methods are quite mixed.
The next most common was by having gates and fences around their property and not leaving a spare key outside.
Just under a third of those surveyed have security cameras installed, with even less having a security alarm system (27%).
Research undertaken by the Australian Institute of Criminology argues that crime rates have decreased thanks to the increased presence of security cameras, as this scares off potential criminals from a property.
This fact, in conjunction with that most home burglaries occurs when no one is home, highlights the importance of having a home security system.
While many hardware stores sell security cameras and systems, and many of these can be installed yourself, home security installers offer a full design-to-installation service.
This has the added benefit of a professional highlighting the best areas to install a camera by highlighting the weak points of your home.
In some states, anyone involved in the installation of security cameras in a home, business or club should hold a Master Security Licence, whether it be for an Alarm or CCTV System.
It is important to check the security company you hire holds the appropriate licence.
