2022, without a doubt, was a rollercoaster year for the Australian property peak.

With prices peaking earlier in the year, the cash rate was lifted every month from May to December, leading to price declines across most markets, most notably in Sydney.

As always, despite the decline in prices and higher interest rates, properties are still being transacted.

Data from property marketplace Domain has revealed what suburbs were the most viewed by potential buyers this year.

Although inner city suburbs in Sydney rankled highly, the top suburb was Gisborne in Victoria. This is believed to be due to being featured in The Block, which was broadcast by Channel Nine – who has a majority shareholding in Domain.

“As the property market has slowed since last year, interest rates have risen and uncertainty in the market has meant the buyer pool is a lot smaller than it was,” noted Domain’s Chief of Research and Economics Dr Nicola Powell.

“However, we’re certainly a country of dreamers who love searching for the most appealing and interesting suburbs near us whether that’s a tree or sea change in Queensland or vibrant inner-city living in Sydney.

“Next year, we predict that entry-priced houses and units will hold firmer, particularly in the more expensive capital cities so there may be some that will make their dreams a reality in these suburbs in 2023.”
