The new social housing complex Avenell Heights is the fruit of a partnership between the Queensland Government and Regional Housing Limited (RHL).

Completed four months faster than expected, the facility will soon accommodate 16 Queensland households in what is being called “safe, secure and sustainable housing”.

Minister for Communities and Housing, Leeanne Enoch said that the $3.96 million construction was funded under the ‘Partnering for Growth’ initiative.

“Community housing providers have an important role to play in delivering social and affordable homes at subsidised rates for low to moderate income earners.

“This project has also supported 13 full-time equivalent jobs in the local building industry, plus many more through the building supply chain,” she said.

The complex is one of the various initiatives that are to be delivered through the ‘Queensland Housing and Homelessness Action Plan 2021-2025’ launched by Ms Enoch.

Initiatives to address the shortage of social and affordable housing have been welcomed by industry bodies such as the REIA, who made calls on the government to address the issue earlier in the year.

$4.81 million has been provided by the government to RHL to fund two other projects in the local area.

“On top of these, we are committed to other projects to increase the number of homes available to those who need it in the Bundaberg region and beyond,” Ms Enoch said.

Brett Hanna, Regional Housing Limited CEO, said he was excited that the partnership is able to bring help to families when they need it most.

“Regional Housing Limited is thrilled to be delivering affordable homes in partnership with the Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy,” he said.
