Tipalea Partners’ $40 million Tasmanian retail centre has been completed two weeks ahead of schedule after more than a year since construction began.

Glebe Hill Village, located at the intersection of the South Arm Highway and Pass
Road, is the first new neighbourhood shopping centre to be built in metropolitan Hobart in over a decade.

The Coles-anchored retail centre took 15 months for Tasmanian contractor Fairbrother to complete and generated around 500 on-site jobs throughout the construction process.

Offers convenience and community hub

Tipalea Partners CEO Scott Spanton said the private developer is thrilled to have completed and officially opened Glebe Hill Village for business.

“It has raised the bar for neighbourhood shopping in Hobart, bringing high-quality retail combined with variety and convenience to the surrounding community, and it’s been wonderful to see the immense support from local residents.”

In addition to delivering a significant boost to local employment during the height of the pandemic and beyond, Mr Spanton said the retail centre will provide more than 300 ongoing jobs.

Clarence City Council Mayor Alderman Doug Chipman said Glebe Hill Village will be of great benefit to the local community as well as the wider city.

Alderman Chipman said the retail centre will allow residents of the area more convenient to daily amenities, and help to strengthen the sense of community in Glebe Hill.

“The village has been designed to benefit the wider community in a range of
ways and will provide a significant benefit for the growing area of Clarence
Plains, which we predict will grow to a population of more than 20,000
people and become a satellite city in its own right in another 10 years’ time.

“This development will help ensure we have more infrastructure and services
in place to meet the needs of this booming area,” he said.

Centre hailed Tasmania’s smartest

The 5,900 sqm retail centre consists of a full-line Coles supermarket, 18 speciality shops, air-conditioned facilities, and an on-grade car park with 260 parking spaces.

Among the centre’s retailers are seven food and beverage providers including a 24-hour McDonalds, and nine service providers including a medical centre.

Fairbrother General Manager Paul Ransley said the construction company is proud to have delivered the retail centre ahead of schedule.

“Many obstacles were overcome during the construction process with the biggest challenges faced including COVID-19 restrictions along with labour shortages, issues with supply chain and delayed materials delivery.”

“I am proud of how the Fairbrother team overcame these to deliver Hobart’s newest retail centre more than two weeks earlier than planned.”

According to Tipalea Partners, the Glebe Hill Centre has already been recognised as the most connected and sustainable retail centre in Tasmania.

The centre incorporates a range of smart-tech solutions to enhance the experience for its visitors, including an app, free wireless phone charging, Wi-Fi, real-time air quality monitoring, smart bathrooms that monitor water usage, and EV charging.

“We are proud to pioneer retail centre apps in Tasmania and elevate the level of customer service and convenience on offer at Glebe Hill Village.

The app allows users to pre-order food and book appointments for services in the centre as well as view key data in real-time, such as how busy the centre is along with environmental performance information,” concluded Mr Spanton.
