  • Stable and Cart House won the top award

Recently, the 2022 Australian Interior Design Awards (AIDA) were held, with Stable and Cart House by Clare Cousins Architects unanimously awarded the event’s top award, the Premier Awards for Interior Design.

The design minds all met at a gala dinner at the Sydney Grand Hyatt over the weekend. Now in its nineteenth year, the program is delivered through a partnership consisting of the Design Institute of Australia and Architecture Media’s Artichoke Magazine.

The jury applauded Stable and Cart House as “sublime in every way” and noted it is “the absolute standout project across all categories by clearly being an exemplary piece of work.

“What resonates most is the authenticity of the design and the way it has been conceived to be lived in not just looked at.”

The home was also awarded the Residential Design Award and the Best of State Residential Design (VIC).

The Residential Decoration Award was awarded to Troye Svian House, conceived by Flack Studio, with the jury noting its respectful acknowledgement of the building’s history.

“(Flack Studio captured) a strong sense of the client’s character through a beautiful curation of art, furniture, lighting and objects in a way that doesn’t feel forced or contrived.”

Studio Edward’s Finesse Shoe Store received the Retail Design Award, along with a commendation for the Sustainability Advancement Award.

“it is a simple project beautifully realised that also manages to convey a sense of ‘urbanness’ relevant to the nature of selling sneakers,” the judges said.

The Hospitality Design submissions were “incredibly impressive and hard to judge”, with Studio Gram’s Arkhe being awarded the Hospitality Design Award, and Best of State Award for Commercial Design (SA). The jury commented “the highly experiential nature of moving through the interior makes for a gutsy, powerful project.”

Sustainability was seen across all categories, with the Award for Sustainability Advancement given to two projects – 17 Union Street from BKK Architects and Clare Cousins Architects and FJMT Studio’s Built Head office.

The jury said 17 Union Street “champions longevity and the importance of thinking about sustainability in regard to long term building use rather than short term compliance.”

The Built Head Office was applauded for the “amazing innovative solutions” it presents for sustainability at a global level.

Braham Perera and Pattern Studio were dually awarded the Emerging Inteior Design Practice.
