Mining giant, BHP, will continue its stay at Brookfield’s St George’s Terrace property for another decade and a half. The resources company has committed to a new 15-year lease for circa 41,000 square metres of space at Brookfield Place.

BHP anchored the Tower 1 development when it was completed in 2012, with the property to soon see upgrades:

“We are thrilled to be able to continue what has been a great long-term partnership with BHP and to re-imagine their WA Head Office for their future workplace needs,” said Danny Poljak, Executive Vice President & Co-Head, Brookfield Properties

“As part of the renewed commitment to the precinct, Brookfield will undertake a significant re-investment into both the tower and precinct, including upgrading the Tower 1 lobby, end of trip facilities and services. We’ll also create some 8,000 sqm of flex space to accommodate BHP’s on-demand needs while also servicing our broader tenant community.”

As part of Brookfield’s refresh of the 125 St George’s address, the company will, once again, team up with Whadjuk representatives Barry McGuire and Carol Innes from Soft Earth to Design for Country, with an aspiration that First Nations voices will be reflected in the renewed precinct design.

This follows the company’s successful collaboration with Whadjuk Representatives on the nearby One The Esplanade development at Elizabeth Quay, and Brookfield Properties’ recent launch of its inaugural Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan.

The design of One the Esplanade was undertaken in collaboration with the original custodians of the land, the Whadjuk people, whose culture is represented in the landscape and through public sculptures.  The topping-out ceremony included a smoking ceremony performed by representatives of the Whadjuk people.

The Brookfield Place property features leading sustainability ratings including a current 5 Star NABERS Base Building Energy Rating and a 6 Star NABERS Indoor Environment Rating.

Mr Poljak said: “This re-commitment by BHP is a further endorsement of Brookfield Place as a premium address in the heart of the Perth CBD; a precinct that is defined by its outstanding office accommodation, strong sustainability credentials, diverse retail and wellness amenities, along with its year-round arts and cultural activations.

“We look forward to celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Brookfield Place in August when we will once again host our signature Winter Lights Festival. This year promises to be the biggest and most exciting event yet.”

BHP WA Iron Ore Asset President Brandon Craig said the business was excited to continue its partnership with Brookfield to house its West Australian operations in the Perth CBD.

Mr Craig said: “BHP is focused on providing its people with the best amenities in the city centre and will work alongside Brookfield to ensure the space reflects our hybrid way of working, with wellness facilities and culturally-respectful surroundings in line with our social value principles.”
