Major projects are steaming ahead on opposite sides of the country as One The Esplanade reaches practical completion, and a Canberra hospital expansion tops out.

Critical services building tops out

The Canberra Hospital Expansion has topped out, with the project expecting to complete construction in mid-2024.

Celebrating the milestone, an event was held on the new rooftop helipad of the hospital extension some 35 metres above street level.

The Canberra Hospital Expansion is the largest healthcare infrastructure project ever undertaken by the ACT Government. It will meet the growing healthcare needs of the region with increased capacity across adult intensive care, paediatric intensive care, surgical, coronary care and emergency services.

The nine level Critical Services Building will support the ACT Government’s ambitions for an emissions-free health sector, with the hospital to be powered entirely by 100% renewable electricity. Multiplex Regional Managing Director David Ghannoum said:

“Multiplex is targeting a 5-star Design and As Built Green Star rating and has utilised low-carbon concrete and all-electric power for its two cranes. The low carbon concrete alone has eliminated more than 2,000 tonnes of embodied CO2 on the project to date, the equivalent of carbon removed by more than 30,000 tree seedlings grown over 10 years.”

Ghannoum also said: “Multiplex began a collaborative Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase in 2020 where we worked with the ACT Government to fine-tune a design that would support their carbon ambitions and the wider community,” said Multiplex Regional Managing Director David Ghannoum.

“It’s been wonderful to help bring that design to life and reach this significant milestone, particularly given the challenges presented by working within a live hospital environment, with limited access and the added impacts of COVID-19.”

New Brookfield property reaches practical completion

The company’s One The Esplanade office tower at Elizabeth Quay in Perth has reached practical completion. The $800 million development topped out in April last year.

Brookfield’s property will be the new home for Chevron Australia and Herbert Smith Freehills, with the 29 level 57,000 square metre PCA Premium Grade project fronting the Swan riverfront.

Nick Ozich, Brookfield Properties Regional Director, Development and Property, said: “What we are seeing today is the realisation of the WA Government’s commendable vision to create a world class waterfront precinct, and draw the CBD back down to its rightful position on the water’s edge.

“One The Esplanade adds to the great legacy of the emerging Elizabeth Quay precinct, which is already home to high-end tourist accommodation and conferencing facilities, world-class office space, a growing dining precinct and high-rise apartments.

“As tenancy fit-outs complete, we look forward to welcoming Chevron Australia and Herbert Smith Freehills into their new company headquarters. The office and retail space is now fully committed. We will shortly be opening the building gymnasium and childcare centre, and we have secured high-quality food and beverage tenants including 6Head to enhance building amenity.”

One The Esplanade is co-owned by Brookfield, Invesco Real Estate, a global real estate investment manager, and another institutional owner.
