- $40 million to be spent on affordable housing for the University of Sydney
- Includes single and double-room accommodation for 336 students and academics
- Will create 95 construction jobs
The New South Wales State Government has approved a $40 million project that will refurbish terraces in inner-city Darlington that are currently owned by the University of Sydney.
As part of the renovation the Terraces – which currently house 151 students -will be refurbished. Four new buildings between two and four storeys high each, will be built behind the current terraces doubling the capacity of the student accommodation.
Once completed there will be single and double-room accommodation for 336 students and visiting academics, says Rob Stokes, the New South Wales Minister for Planning and Public Spaces.
“Darlington Terraces will be renovated and four new buildings built providing new and improved student housing in the heart of the inner-city and within minutes of public transport,” Mr Stokes said.
“While COVID-19 may have halted the flow of international students to our city, our borders will reopen at some stage. University accommodation is also widely used by students from regional NSW and other states so it’s important we continue planning for our future.”
The Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sydney, Professor Stephen Garton, has welcomed the State Government’s approval of the project.
“We know how important it is for students to have access to affordable housing on or near campus and so I thank the Planning Minister for this terrific news,” Professor Garton said.
“The cost of housing in Sydney can be prohibitive which is why we have worked so hard with the NSW Government to provide a range of affordable housing options for our community.
“What is especially pleasing about this project are the broader benefits for the local area including new landscaping, park upgrades and public art.”
