Earlier this year, The Property Tribune reported on the importance of placemaking.

Creating places and space can leave lasting impressions, and is how a space comes alive, finds its identity, and develops a personality that keeps people coming back or even becoming residents.

Funding

Today, South Australia’s ‘Open Spaces and Places for People’ grant program 2021/22 round opens.

Over the past two years, it has provided $124.7 million to revitalise and improve local public amenities.

“This fund has enabled projects like the Wigley Reserve Playspace at Glenelg, the Prospect Gardens / Narnu Wirra Redevelopment project and the Quorn Bush Tucker Walk get underway – improving community spaces for residents right across South Australia,”

Vickie Chapman, Minister for Planning and Local Government

The value of creating more inviting spaces is important.

“You can’t just build a place, or just physical infrastructure … You have to activate it with the social infrastructure. There’s both a physical environment, and whether people feel welcome there, but then it’s also about the uses. Placemaking has both aspects at the same time,” said Dr Justine Lloyd, of Macquarie University.

The economic impact is also a consideration, argued the Minister.

Ms Chapman said, “It is providing local tradespeople with a long pipeline of work, while simultaneously improving play spaces and walking trails in your backyard.”

“It is important we continue to secure our status as Australia’s most liveable city, and these funds will ensure neighbourhoods have beautiful public spaces for South Australians to enjoy,”

Local councils can apply for the grants through the SmartyGrants online platform, with guidelines available on the PlanSA website.
