The setting was exquisite, as calm and peaceful as the admissions were explosive and shocking.

For her interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Oprah Winfrey chose the outdoor setting of good friend Gayle King’s Californian home.

Ms King is the TV co-host of CBS This Morning as well as editor-at-large for Ms Winfrey’s The Oprah Magazine. If you want someone to open up about themselves, make sure the environment is relaxing.

While Ms King attended Meghan Markle’s baby shower in New York, she has been friends with Oprah Winfrey since the two were young journalists back in the 1970s.

Shown over two hours on Australian TV last night, and overnight in the UK the revelations of alleged racism and lack of support for the royals sent shock waves around the world, and no doubt through the Royal Family (who have yet to respond).

Some are calling this the greatest crisis for ‘The Firm’ since Princess Diana’s tell-all interview with Martin Bashir in 1995.

What many would not have missed was the spectacular backdrop of the interview. Secluded greenery, lush lawns and ivy-covered stone pillars framed the outdoor courtyard for the chat.

Oprah made it quite clear from the outset that this was not hers nor Harry and Meghan’s new Californian home. The Prince and Meghan have moved into their US$14.5M Montecito home near Santa Barbara, about 90 minutes drive north of Los Angeles.

Viewers did get a couple of glimpses of their backyard with a chicken coup, named ‘Archie’s Chick Inn’, housed by rescue chooks from a battery farm.
