The Victorian Labor Government has called for public submissions on social and affordable housing to help formulate a 10-year strategy to address the issue of safe, suitable and secure housing in the state.

Richard Wynne, the Minister for Housing,  announced the discussion paper to as a way to for various stakeholders to comment on the state of social housing to conceive the strategy which will be officially released later this year.

Stakeholders across the community service, housing, private and appropriate government sectors are encouraged to have their say.

“This 10-year strategy will provide the roadmap for a stronger and more sustainable housing system for Victoria,” said Mr Wynne.

“People will be at the centre of this strategy – and we want to hear from as many Victorians as possible through the consultation process.”

He added that the pandemic has drawn attention towards the importance of affordable housing and hopes the strategy results in clearer directions for reform in the social housing sector.

The strategy will formulate a large component of Victoria’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build which will result in 12,000 new homes, making this program the largest investment in affordable and social housing in Australian history.

Along with new social housing, Mr Wynne also cites the new jobs this investment will create as another advantage of the project.

“Our unprecedented investment in safe, secure housing will change lives – not only putting a roof over people’s heads but creating thousands of jobs as we rebuild from coronavirus.”

Consultation for the discussion paper will remain open until 9 April 2021.
