Master Builders WA recently held its Excellence in Construction Awards over the weekend.
The event recognised excellence in the commercial, industrial, and civil engineering sectors for builders demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship and commitment to building excellence.
Held in person, it was recognised the building industry went through a tough period during the pandemic. While classed as an essential service, builders contended with supply chain issues, materials and trade shortages among other challenges.
It was also recognised the event came on the same day further restrictions in Sydney meant construction work would come to a halt until the end of the month.
The finalists
The three finalists for Best Regional Project were:
- Crothers Construction, Broome Senior High School New Facilities,
- GBSC Yurra, Kalbarri Skywalk Infrastructure, and
- Smith Constructions, Clubhouse Oyster Harbour Lifestyle Village.
The winner
Crothers Construction won Best Regional Project.
The Broome Senior High School project involved extensive upgrades and extensions of facilities. The school already accommodates more than 800 students, the upgrades allowing for more capacity.
Crothers created a new two-storey teaching block and completed several other upgrades including an extension to the food technology precinct, the addition of new chemistry labs, 13 new classrooms, a reconfigured carpark, and a new cultural space and a ‘yarning circle’ to host Indigenous cultural ceremonies.
It was noted that the company not only completed the project within the 60-week timeframe, Master Builders Judge Charlie Baggetta said “The builder faced a complex challenge during the construction stage in keeping the school operational while these substantial operations were carried out,”.
That message was echoed by Crothers Construction Director, Adam Harry, who added that the works were carried out over 5 separate portions of the existing school site.
It was also noted, Crothers sourced two-thirds of the sub-contractors and suppliers from Broome.
Crothers Construction also won Best Aged Care Building in the $5 million – $10 million category for the Bedingfeld Park RACF Expansion Project in Pinjarra.
