The Victorian Government has announced a string of grants to 21 councils it says will fast-track planning projects such as the delivery of residential land across the state.

$2.7 million has been provided in grants to 21 councils under the Victoria Government’s Streamlining for Growth program, which is managed by the Victorian Planning Authority.

For regional councils, the program aims to deliver priorities and directions set in the state’s Regional Growth Plans whilst undertaking strategic sites master planning. Additionally, the program seeks to support planning projects that assist areas recovering from bushfires.

For metropolitan councils, the program aims to streamline the subdivision approval process and more specifically support planning backlogs in the Greenfield growth area.

Richard Wynne, the Minister for Planning, said the grants will allow projects to take-off faster due to simpler processes.

“We’re creating jobs and driving Victoria’s economic recovery by helping councils get projects approved and underway faster.”

“The funding will enable councils across the state to cut red tape and streamline planning processes – which will be vital as we continue to recover from the pandemic.”

Included in the program is an $80,000 grant to the Greater Dandenong City Council to streamline the development of Central Dandenong. A 5% infrastructure recovery charge from developments on privately-owned land in Central Dandenong will also be removed.

A $100,000 grant has been allocated to the Bass Coast Shire Council to facilitate private investment in the area by making sure land-use controls match with strategies designed to support local tourism.

Ballarat City Council will use their $100,000 grant for an urban renewal development plan on the 13-hectare site that used to house the Latrobe Street Saleyards and its surrounding 116 hectares of land for industrial, residential, farming and public uses.
