The 2021 Master Builders Housing Excellence Awards was held on Saturday night.
The 41st iteration of the awards saw almost 300 entries considered across 60 categories.
Projects in the running for awards contended with the pandemic, and ever-changing working conditions; The Property Tribune recently reported the Property Council of Australia were pleased to see builders considered essential come the latest Victorian lockdown.
The evening
Master Builders Australia knew how to put on a show, the evening was a disco affair.
Nothing short of roller skates, leg warmers, and enough sequins in the room to make Liberace call it an early night, Executive Director John Gelavis said he was impressed by the high caliber of entries considering the year that was.
“During such unprecedented times, we were pleased to see our members continuing to strive for excellence,”

“Last year, we celebrated our 2020 awards with no idea what was around the corner. It has been an extremely challenging year, and despite setbacks, we have seen some incredible work produced.”
Local Government and Housing Minister, John Carey, also made ovations about the building industry and its contribution towards Western Australia’s strength.
Minister Carey also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to cutting red tape, and beyond the second phase of planning reforms recently announced, the Minister said he would be working to address the bane of many: crossovers.
The finalists
The three finalists announced for the Top WA Home category were:
- Besson Construction in Cottesloe,
- Zorzi Builders in Dalkeith, and
- Dorrington Homes in North Beach.
The top prize
Top WA Home went to Zorzi Builders‘ Dalkeith masterpiece, aptly named, The Peak.
“Flawless is the only word that comes to mind…”

The four-story masterpiece “perched on the banks of the Swan” also made a near clean sweep of the trade-specific awards, taking top spot in painting, ceilings, plastering, carpentry, and external finishes.
Executing high-end projects like this is a particularly onerous task said Chief Judge, Robert Shaw.
“These top-tier homes tend to have a smaller margin for error given their grandeur. The complex nature of The Peak is a testament to the talent and expertise present within the Zorzi team and something they should all be proud of.”
The project is said to feature “one of the largest sky-framed windows in the southern hemisphere.”
Winners of other major categories included Bluewater Building for Best Country Home, Plunkett Homes for Best Display Home and Amerex Renovations and Additions for Best Alterations and Additions.
