The 2021 Master Builders Excellence in Construction Awards was held on Saturday night.
The thirty-first iteration of the awards saw some of Western Australia’s most impressive, multi-million dollar projects recognised for exceptional craftsmanship and commitment to building excellence.
The evening
John Gelavis, Executive Director for Master Builders WA, touched on the tumultuous year that was, thanking the WA government for ensuring builders were classed as an essential service.
This came as news broke on Saturday morning, construction work across Greater Sydney would come to a halt until 30 July due to the ongoing Delta variant outbreak.
Mr Gelavis also spoke about the importance of the building and construction industry in WA, with some 133,000 workers in the industry, comprising 9.5% of the state’s workforce.
“It’s pleasing to see the building and construction industry has been asked to lead the economic recovery at both the state and federal level,” he said.
The finalists
The four finalists for the 2021 Best Project were:
- PACT Construction, Belmont Hub,
- BADGE Construction, Newman College Student Hub,
- Crothers Construction, Broome Senior High School New Facilities, and
- Multiplex, NEXTDC P2.
The top prize
2021 Master Builders WA Best Project was awarded to Multiplex for the NEXTDC P2 project. The project also won Best Industrial Building for the $50 – $100 million category.
Located close to the CBD on Newcastle Street, the Uptime Tier IV (Design) certified facility is WA’s largest and most powerful data centre.
Master Builders WA Chief Judge, Robert Shaw remarked Multiplex had taken on a complex project:
“The judges looked closely at the quality of construction, project management, value for money, innovation and site management, among other factors. Multiplex had excelled in all areas, particularly in technical detail,” Mr Shaw said.
Multiplex Constructions WA Regional Managing Director, Chris Palandri added that “Being WA’s largest data centre, it was a major development, with many intricacies along the way.”
